Manlio and daughter Margherita with him; further, a workman named Gh~lli Nella, his old mother, and his sister Angelina. Stagni Ettore, ex-non-commissioned officer at the front, was attacked in his own house and beaten until the blood came, in the presence of his five weeping children. A workman named Sassatelli Anello was attacked in his own hous·e and beaten, and after jumping out of the window he was fired at from rifles and revolvers. In the hamlet of S. Pietro Capofiume a band of Fascists beat Mainardi Stefano and Mainardi. Francesco; and a workman named Lanzoni Antonio was beaten in his own house. Meanwhile the police proceeded to the arrest-of those who had been beaten, and of a further twenty workers guilty of having subscribed to Giustizia; some of them were kept in prison for several days. The acts of violence detailed above were endured by the organised masses o.f the Commune without any single one of them retorting in kind, in accordance with the resolution passed by the general meeting in March, 1922. On the other hand, not one day's imprisonment was imposed on those responsible for the outrages, although every one was reported to the police. Biblioteca Gino Bianco
