Butthefactthatwehaven'tyetfoundorworkedout—and maynever—asystembeteradaptedtotheneedsoftoday thanMarxismdoesnotinanywaymakeMarxismtitself adaptedtothoseneeds.Oneshouldnotmakea"lesserevil" choiceamongsocialphilosophiesanymorethanamong beligerentsinaworldwar.Someofushavecornetothe sadconclusionthatMarxismisnolongeradequatetothe socialistendswehaveinview.Wearegropingaround, changingourminds,doubtlessoftenmakingfoolsofourselves,butuntiladrasticbreakismadewiththeoldtradi- tion—whichinvolvestheriskanddiscomfortofbeingso tospeakideologicallyhorneless—anewapproachwillnot befound.Peoplearelazyandwon'treallybestirthemselvesuntiltheyloseconfidenceintheoldways.Thisdoesn't meanthatMarxismwassimplyavastmistake,tobeforgotten,castaside.Onlycrackpotswithapanaceabehave
