situation is near. But both the analysis and the conclusions are wrong. The CNT has gone through a phase of internai debate, which now seems to be lessening, maybe in anticipation of a congress which may be held next year. The debate, from time to time, developed into a hard confrontation and sometimes touched the bitter depths of personal resentment. Everybody made mistakes during this « belligerent » period. The sectors which are even now the most involved in the debate are mainly the « acrata » sector and a sector which can be defined as classical anarco-syndicalist. The former sector is resistant to the anarco-syndicalist synthesis and to the activities which corne from it. It sees the CNT as an instrument for the promotion of assemblyism, workers' autonomy, the self-organisation of the workers, ail which are seen as priorities and inspiration for the CNT. It defends the concept of an overall organisation under which to re-unite all the areas of struggle in which revolutionary action manifests itself. There also exists a fraction which is favourable, in a manner of speaking, to union struggles, but it also accepts this concept of the extension of the struggle. The classical anarco-syndicalist sector is in the majority. It sees the struggles which take priority as being those in the world of industrial relations, that is the world of labour. Without discounting the importance of the other aspects of the struggle, which should be brought together by the united actions of all the sectors of the libertarian movement, the anarco..syndicalist sector maintains that if the battle for the growth of confederated syndicalism is lost, the whole future of the libertarian movement and of Spanish anarchism will be imperilled. There also exists a sector, albeit limited, of anarco-communists and platformists (archinovists) which is against anarco-syndicalism, proposes the formation of a kind of libertarian party and supports the « acrata » sector favourable to an overall organisation. They have very few followers but are very active inside the CNT. Without doubt, there also exists a sector of marxist infiltrators - a minority faction - which is also active and operates through alternating its support among various groups which it wishes to urge on depending on the occasion, with the aim of creating the maximum possible confusion. There also exists an anarco-councilism, or marxist-councilism, which from time-to-time, is mixed in with the « acrata » sector. Finally, there is the question of the specific organisation, that is the FAI (Federaci6n Anarquista lberica), around which, despite its actual confused situation, a discrete interest is developing. 63
