"On November 13, 1976, my wife and I took part in a peaceful demonstration organized by the citizen's action group for the environmental protection of the Lower Elbe .... We wanted to find out if demonstrators and police would really act as had been reported in the television program "Brokdorf - A Second Wyhl?" as well as in various other broadcasts and publications. ''The police, wearing high boots and carrying rubber clubs, had blocked the road to Brokdorf so that we had to walk the last 6 kilometers. When we reached the outskirts of town, no one kept us from turning left to reach the construction site of the nuclear plant .... We were surprised to see how incredibly well-protected the site was, just like a fortress. It was surrounded by a wide, newly-dug moat with water in it and rolls of NATO barbed wire, with a row of policemen in fighting stance equipped with helmets, shields, rubber clubs, and, as we were soon to find out, tear gas bombs and percussion grenades, standing behind. At various places along the asphalt road on one side of the construction site, young men and women were making an attempt to pull rolls of NATO barbed wire across the moat using cables with hooks (*) German lypeseller, 27.
