On the 20th November, 1977, Louis Mercier Vega, the man to whose initiative and determination our magazine owes its existence, died. He founded "Interrogations" three years ago, took care of the editorial side for two years and gave us his invaluable and irreplaceable help in this first year of "Italian management". Louis Mercier Vega killed himself. Not out of despair, not because he was beaten. He killed himself because he wanted to be, in the end, his own master. Because he did not want to wait for the physical decay of age, the inability to understand and act, to dictate the finis to his activity as an anarchist militant. We, and also you who read us, are indebted to him. You will forgive us then if this note is not limited to a brief account of the work of our editorial group. You will understand why this number of "Interrogations" is, also, an homage to our comrade, to our friend, who is no more. But our intention is not exclusively hagiographical. The first of the two texts by Mercier Vega, "Sur les groupes d'affinite" (with an introduction by Marianne Enckell) can be considered a first approach to a serious study of the organizational problem within the specific anarchist movement. The second, an interview in Spanish, provides the reader with a series of intelligent observations on Latin America (on which Mercier Vega was a particular expert) and on anarchism in general. In this number too we publish a short but interesting critical study of Gramsci, a solitary dissenting voice to the chorus of praise which the "rediscovery" of the marxist thinker is currently giving rise to in Italy. Bruno Bongiovanni has contributed a prefatory note. Next we publish a German article (translated into • English) on one of the problems which interest us most, opposition by the "base" to abuses of power by the system. We take this opportunity to apologise to readers for the repeated delays with which the magazine has, lately, appeared. This was due, also, to the difficulties of finding texts which really match up to the aims .which gave birth to "Interrogations". Libertarian culture (which does exist) is not yet sufficiently deeply rooted to furnish a constant production and the editorial labour of "searching out" is complicated and difficult. We have no illusions about this. But we are carrying on. 4
