SUMMARY In the so-called Socialist countries news reporting is not a major feature of the mass-media, unlike that of the western countr ies. The «facts» are reported by the press with the sole purpose of ill ustrating that image of social, political and economic reality which serve s to legitimise the Party/State. Therefore, in order to inform reade rs about something that has happened, the information must either be inserted into the typical articles which the papers carry, on topics such as party politics, industrial production, culture, and so forth, or be inc luded in press campaigns on a national level. Despite all this, every day the papers carry news of « various events» which can be derived from these contrived viewpoints and can be useful in shedding light on the real nature of society and its proble ms. The author has translated a series of these article from SCJNT EIA, the organ of the Central Committee of the Rumanian. Communis t Party, and here presents a sort of anthology in. which it is possible to find much interesting information on. absenteeism, the reappropria tion by people of the fruits of their labour, rebellion against the fa mily, or against the State-controlled schools, all of which provides u s with a « sectional » view of the struggle carried on from day to day in small ways by the people against oppression by the authorities. 23
