Interrogations - anno II - n. 4 - settembre 1975

Summary The author means to show us a quick X-ray photograph of the presenl Spanish soctety. This society ts the result of the industrialtzation of those last fifteen years and has no longer any ltkeness wtth the one whtch extsted in July 1936 when the Civil War broke out. The country has fundamentally changed, /rom a matnly agrtcultural State to industrial characteristtcs. wtth all the consequences that it tnvolves. Crowds of country people wtthout land and work have lejt the country-stde, the number of small estates has grown less and mechanizatton has asserted itself. At the same ttme tndustr11 has developed and the number of workers has doubled. To<lay those industrial workers are a very btg potential power which already appears through claims and strikes. The leading part played by the money-market is analysed. lt ts the true master of the country econom,y, for the system of credtt and tnvestments prevatls in the main tndustrtal ftrms. Mention ts also made of the Army thanks to which Franco's government has asserted ttself and grown firm. Great part of the work is devoted to the trade-unton set up by Franco's government in the totalitartan style but which has never found a favourable echo in the working class. The strtkes which were launched were less directed against the body of employers or 1 he State than against the vertical trade-unions themselves which are official bodies tntended to prevent or check the workers' clatms. The study ends by a vtew on the present economical and polttical situation whtch is marked by an obvious crisis whose solution sttll is doubtful. Anyway tt ts vatn to chertsh tllustons concerntng the replacement of Franco by Prince Juan Carlos as well as concerntng the com-muntst manœuvres which are an attempt to subject the u·orking class to what is called «the civiltzed rtght wtng». 52
