Interrogations - anno II - n. 4 - settembre 1975

Summary Public opinion is currently alerted against any manifestation of imperialism, especially when it cames /rom the U.S.A.; however, the development of multi-, supra- and transnational corporations creates deep changes within the economic systems tradttionally linked with the national states. The West accepted and entrusted North-American leadership with the defence of its tmmediate and remote frontiers, and paid a price now estimated to be too costly -·inflation-, yet, in fact it depends less and less on a single polarisation. Links and interdependencies established by industrial and financial societies, not limited by frontiers or to nattve lands, amalgamating Japanese, European and North-American capital among others, act in such a way that the Western world depends more and more on an anonymous, international, unanchored imperialtsm than upon national centers. When they are detached from the states, multinational corporations don't burden themselves with ideologies, so that norms of rationality and organization are easily transferred to the enterprises of the so-called socialist countries. Various styles in management but similar hierarchical patterns seem to be emerging among Western and Socialist managers. For man,y years now, agreements between multinational corporations and Eastern financial organizations or firms have increased in number. Western capital and technology, added to the low prices - and discipline, of Eastern European labor are bringing both systems to amalgamation. As a result, the U.S.S.R. is at present in favor of an all-directional policy of «economtc opening-up». One may envisage that in some possible future ttme the two great imperialisms Will te.mporarily cooperate in a corwerted or even common exploitation, within the transnational system of the Third World, - outside and instde.
