Summary The fact that it concerned each individuai as such was an important and original characteristtc of the May 1968 revoluttonary outburst in so far as tt was dtrected against all hierarchtes and all forms of represston - economical, polittcal, soctal, parental, sexual - gathered tn one and the same denial. That's why tts ltmits could not be those of a spectfic social group. All those who tn our repressive socteties constantly come up agatnst the soctal hterarchy tn tlieir everyday Hfe were directl,y concerned by that rebellton. The students rebelled agatnst the Universtty, the «mandarins» and the so-called teachers with thetr out-of-date teachtng; the workers rebelled against thetr sweating and thetr condttton of automatons endlessl,y maktng the same gestures; the ctttzens rebelled agatnst the State and tts mantfold police ; the women rebellecl. agatnst all that and also against the male dictatorshtp ; the young people rebelled as well against all that and at the same ttme against the Famtly. And so clid everybody. But each one fought tor the destructton of all hierarchies as he fought agatnst that whtch concerned htm most. That's why the May 1968 . movement is the best example of a revoluttonar11., crists in our modern world and modem socteties. That's also why few people have understood the deep meantng of such a crisis. it was one of a too new cut. Except tn thetr spectfic role of «watchdogs», th~ revoluttonary «vanguards» of marxist-lentntst type, as well as thetr organtzattons and creeds, could not be seen anywhere. All patterns proved to be out-of-date. It is really useless to try and reduce the May movement to a formula or a pattern in whtch c'l>erybody could find hts beartngs /or its language is in the first person stngular. The common language of May 1968 - the ltbe.rtartan :anguage - was therefore made of a multipltctty of indivtdual tx>tces, each speaking tor itself. 91
